Balarama

This is Balarama, one of the ten avatars of Vishnu. In some accounts Balarama is not included among the ten avatars of Vishnu, but Buddha is. Balarama is Krishna’s (Vasudeva) elder brother and took his incarnation simultaneously with Krishna.

Some associate Balarama with Sesha, the seat of Vishnu and the supporter of the earth. For sure he is associated with snakes, as we can see from this example.

His attributes include ploughshare and pestle. In this example he is holding a ploughshare in his righthand. See the second in the group photo. His left hand is in Varada mudra.

The ploughshare connects him to agriculture and so does the snake hood over his crown.

Normally you tend to see Balarama in the Dasavathara panels/depictions. Standalone temples for him are rare. Strangely enough Krishna Balarama temples are common in the US.

The VIgraha is about 13 cm tall, and it is from Tamil Nadu/Karnataka region. This may be dated to the early 19th century. One of the unusual features is the octagonal base.
