Palani Andavar

Palani Andavar

Palani Andavar (Palani God) refers to a form of Murugan, son of Shiva and Parvati. Palani Andavar backPalani is also the name of a town in Tamil Nadu where he is the presiding deity.

This icon is from Tamil Nadu and is about 22 cm in height.

One of the unusual aspects of this icon is the footwear, Padukai. In general deities, in South India are barefoot.

Prabhavali, back plate, is missing. Normally Palani would have held vel (spear) in his right hand and it is missing as well.

This is probably from the 19th century.
