Crawling Krishna

Sometimes when I receive the shipped antiques, I close my eyes just before removing the final wrapper. I open my eyes only after removing the final wrapper and getting a good feel of the bronze. The first look normally evokes a spontaneous response and it has ranged from ‘wow’ to ‘fraud’. I learned this technique from the book The Blink by Malcolm Gladwell.

That is what I did with this bronze, despite having spent a fair amount of time looking at the photos before bidding. The first reaction was a ‘wow, it is a beauty’ and that is what it is.

Crawling Krishna is a common subject and this is not an antique as it dates to the second half of the nineteenth century. The craftsmanship and the elegance of proportions make this Vigraha an outstanding one.

I have included several photos for you to see and enjoy. This blog site has several crawling Krishnas and I suggest you read this Krishna for more information.

This Vigraha is from the Mysore region in Karnataka. The material, workmanship, the pinched hair-do and chubby but toned body support the regional attribution. This Vigraha is about 7.5 cm in height.

Interestingly I found another Crawling Krishna smaller in size, 4 cm tall, but of a similar style in the MAAS museum. A picture is included for your reference. It is likely that these two are from the same workshop.
