The identification of the Vigraha is the easiest. Ganesha is the second most widely recognized deity after Nataraja. The elephant head, pot belly, Ankush (elephant goad) and noose are some of the identifying features.
This Ganesha is special on several counts. He is portrayed as sitting on a three-headed cobra, very much like Vishnu. Normally, the cobra serves as the waistbelt for Ganesha. The trunk is turned to the right, marking the highly auspicious nature of this Vigraha.
The hair arrangement, seen in the back view, indicates that this Ganesha is from Kerala. Some of the other aspects, such as sitting posture and material, show nearby Karnataka influence. According to the vendor, it is from North Kerala.
The Vigraha is about 7 cm in height, and it may be from the eighteenth century.
The proportion, clean lines and the balance make this Vigraha a classic.
