Narasimha is identified through his leonine face and human body and the attributes Chakra and Shankha. Lakshmi’s identification is by association and her breast band. Lakshmi is perched on Narasimha’s left thigh.
Narasimha’s form came into being to vanquish Hirenyakasipu. For more information on that story, please see my blog on Ugra Narasimha.
After killing Hirenyakasipu, Narasimha’s anger did not subside, and he continued his destructive activities, endangering the world. Lakshmi approached Narasimha and sat on his lap to bring his anger under control. And that is the scene we have here.
This Vigraha is from Tamil Nadu and is a well-cast bronze. See the open mouth and the depiction of his teeth. Masterclass. The addition of Sesha as his seat and to protect his head makes this Vigraha even more imposing.
The Vigraha is 17 cm tall, an impressive size. This may be dated to the eighteenth century.
