Mohra (Devatas)

This is a Mohra from Himachal Pradesh. The literal meaning of Mohra is a mask. But this bronze is never worn or used as a mask. A mask tends to have an aperture for the eyes, nostrils, and mount. That is not so here. In addition, the Mohra normally includes torso and masks rarely do. However, it is called Mohra because of popular usage. Devata (Gods) is a better name for them.

The Mohra is worshipped as it is (with appropriate decorations), on its own or in a group.Normally they depict Shiva, Durga or Naga. Rarer depictions include local heroes and Saints.

These are revered figures from Himachal and are the subject of a twice a year congregation. For more information on the Mohras please refer to the site on Vally of Gods.

This Mohra depicts a Goddess, Durga, adorned richly with two snakes on her torso. It is made of brass, and it is a cast piece as compared to embossed ones. The Mohra is smooth to touch, worn due to decades of worship, and it may be dated to the eighteenth century or earlier.

This is the second Mohra on this website and they are shown together below for easy comparison.

Note: See the blog on the first Mohra, as it has an analysis of that Mohra compared to its fake.
