Palani Andavar (Palani God) refers to a form of Murugan, son of Shiva and Parvati. Palani is also the name of a town in Tamil Nadu, and Palani Andavar is the presiding deity of that town.
This icon is from Tamil Nadu and is about 22 cm in height.
One of the unusual aspects of this icon is the footwear, Paduka. In general, in South India, deities are not shown with footwear.
Prabhavali, the back plate, is missing. Normally, Palani would have held a vel (spear) or a staff in his right hand, and it is missing as well.
This is probably from the 19th century.
