Parasurama

This folkish Vigraha is Parasurama, an avatar of Vishnu. The identification is based on his attributes: an arrow, an axe, a lotus and a bow. The axe is his trademark.

Here he stands erect, in Samapada, on a Bhadrapeetha. Parasurama is an ascetic. Here he is shown wearing a crown, and such depictions are not uncommon.

The Prabhavali has a Kiritimukha and a fived-headed cobra that protects the deity.

It is a three-piece construction, comprising Prabhavali, the deity, and Peetha. That is typical of bronzes from the Karnataka region.

The back is not worked on. Normally, the South Indian bronzes have their back defined and decorated, except for bronzes from the Kolhapur region.

It is rare to find a Parasurama bronze Vigraha. This is a complete set, making it even rarer.

This Vigraha is about 18 cm in height, and it may be dated to the nineteenth century.
