This is a different kind of blog. The subject of this blog has no known comparable figures and that precludes any stylistic comparison.
This is Parvathi and Ganesha. Identification of Parvathi is by her association with Ganesha. Parvathi is holding Ganesha by his upper arms and pushing him away from her. The four-armed Ganesha is sitting on a swing, see the rope he is holding with his lower hands.
This is one of the typical things for parents to do while indulging in their children. Well, wait for a moment, are they not Deities we worship? That is the point. This is one of the very few occasions when Deities are portrayed with human traits. That is what makes this bronze collection- worthy.
It is a bronze that makes you smile.
This bronze is from Kerala, going by the style and colour of the alloy. It is about 8 cm in height.
I found it difficult to estimate the age. The base shows some wear, and the face does not have any significant wear. I checked other Kerala bronzes with me. None of them show the wear we see in bronzes from Tamil Nadu/Karnataka/Andhra Pradesh/Telangana. In any case, age was not a deciding factor in this purchase.
12 Nov 2023: A note from the previous owner on the dating:
“The previous owner told me that it is a bronze from the Chera Dynasty from the 15th century. This is very possible, the minimal amount of abrasion is typical of pieces from Kerala.”
