Shiva and his family

This is the first family of the Hindu Pantheon: Shiva, Parvathi, Ganesha and Skanda.

Shiva is identified by the Trishul (upper right hand) and his vahana, Nandi, below his left foot.

Skanda or Karthikeya is on Shiva’s right, on the ridge of the pedestal. Karthikeya is identified by association, and his vahana, a peacock.

This Vigraha is from Gujarat. The kalasa on the top of the prabhavali and the studs between the deity and the prabhavali are some of the indicators.

This bronze is a part of my continuing effort to research the depiction of the same subject matter across different geographic and linguistic regions of India. A collage of what has been published so far is below.

This bronze is just 6.5 cm in height, and the detailing in that size makes it a special one. This bronze may be dated to the eighteenth century or earlier.
