Vishnu triad (Karnataka)

This is Vishnu with his consorts Sri Devi and Bhu Devi. Sri Devi is standing on Vishnu’s right and is identified by her breastband.

Note the Shankha and Chakra on the Prabhavali, at the same level as that in Vishnu’s hands. Display of the deity’s attriibutes on the Prabhavali is a typical feature of Vigrahas from North Karnataka.

It is cast in a single piece. The wear due to ritual use adds to the charm. The Vigraha is about 18.5 cm tall, and it is from Karnataka (North?). The Vigraha may be dated to the eighteenth century.

Not too long ago, I published a blog on another single-cast Vishnu Triad and that blog provides additional information.

This blog site has several Vishnu triads. When you put those Vishnu Traids together an interesting trend emerges. Below are Vishnu triads from Himachal Pradesh, Bengal, North Karnataka, Karnataka, and Kerala, from our left to right. The above geographic regions are from North to South.

It is intriguing to note the relative size of the consorts concerning Vishnu. The consort’s size ranges Vishnu’s knee (Himachal), waist heigh (Pala/Bengal), Chest high (North Karnataka), shoulder high (Karnataka) and almost equal (Kerala).

It is obvious the Stapathis from different regions followed different norms while casting these bronzes. It is a matter of speculation as to whether the norms were influenced by social practices and/or a reflection of the physical characteristics in those regions.
