Vithoba with his consorts

This Vithoba, the reigning deity of Maharashtra, is with his consorts Rukmini and Satyabhama. This Vigraha is complete with the Peetha and Prabhavali. Interesting iconography.

Vithoba is also known as Vittala and Panduranga. The main temple of Vithoba is in Pandharpur, Maharashtra. The blog on Panduranga and Rukmini has additional information.

The worship of Vithoba, a form of Vishnu, goes back to the Hoysala period, the 13th century, if not earlier. This iconography of Vithoba with a tapered crown and his consorts in tribanga holding lotus in hands is represented in the Vijayanagar period (13th-16th century CE) relief sculpture from Hampi. The photo is from the book Sculpture at Vijayanagara: Iconography and Style by Anna L Dallapiccola and Anila Verghese.

This site has another example of Vithoba with consorts, a Ganga-Jamuna bronzes, but without peetha and prabhavali. A comparison of them is in order.

Vittala’s iconography differs only to the extent of the Shankha’s position. The differences in the consorts’ iconography stand out. Two significant differences are the hand position and the Tribanga posture. It looks like the bronzes belong to different schools and/or are separated by time.

This Vigraha is about 22 cm tall, and it is from Karnataka. Going by the wear, this may be dated to the 17th century.
