Anjaneya

This is Anjaneya in the act of eulogising his master, Sri Rama. An ardent devotee of Rama, he is an integral part of the Ram Durbar.

Anjaneya is a Pan-Indian deity and often worshipped on his own.

This Anjaneya Vigraha is a result of such devotion, and it has the hallmarks of having been in an altar as their Ishta Devata, chosen personal God. The presence of Shankha and Chakra and the embellishments on the tail suggest this was worshipped on its own.

Here, Anjaneya holds a stringed musical instrument and a manuscript. The two layers of vanamala add to the presence. The manuscript is inscribed. I read that inscription as Sri Rama Jayam (Victory to Sri Rama).

This is the third bronze of Anjaneya singing a bhajan in my collection, see below. Whether he is sitting, kneeling or standing, Anjaneya’s devotion to his master is unquestionable.

This Vigraha is from North-West Deccan, and it is about 11 cm tall. This may be dated to the 18th-19th century.
