Krishna is one of Vishnu’s avatars. Flute playing Krishna is called Venu-Gopala. In this image, he is shown with two Chauri bearers and two cows. Krishna was brought up in an agricultural community as a cowherd boy.
The sculpture captures cows rapt attention quite well.
This piece is cast in parts and assembled. The Chauri bearers are standing on platforms.
Flat prabhavali, the arch at the back, indicates this piece is from Eastern India. It is about 11.5 cm tall. It is said to date the 19th century.
